Nearly two in every five mobile phones stolen across Europe are taken in the United Kingdom, according to recent data compiled by the American insurance company SquareTrade. The analysis, which covers claims across 12 European markets, revealed that 39% of all phone thefts reported to the company occurred in the UK. This figure is particularly striking given that the UK accounts for just 10% of SquareTrade’s European customer base, indicating a disproportionate concentration of thefts in the region.
The data further shows a dramatic rise in phone theft claims in the UK, with a reported increase of 425% since June 2021. Within the UK, London emerges as a significant hotspot, accounting for 42% of the country’s phone thefts. This translates to 16% of all phone thefts across Europe occurring in the British capital alone. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that around 80,000 mobile phones were stolen in London last year, underscoring the scale of the issue in the city.
Authorities have described phone theft as an 'organized criminal enterprise,' with the stolen devices carrying an estimated street value of £20 million. iPhones are noted as the most frequently targeted devices. James Conway, a Metropolitan Police commander specializing in phone thefts, explained that the crime has become increasingly attractive to criminal gangs. These groups, often involved in other illegal activities such as drug dealing and county lines operations, are turning to phone theft due to the high profitability and relatively lower risk of severe criminal penalties compared to drug-related offenses. Conway noted that the demand for stolen phones in overseas markets has fueled this trend, creating significant financial incentives for thieves.
The Metropolitan Police have also highlighted disparities in sentencing as a contributing factor, with penalties for theft often being less severe than those for drug trafficking, especially for younger offenders. In response to the growing problem, police have urged phone companies to disable cloud services on stolen devices as a potential deterrent to thieves. The issue of mobile phone theft continues to pose a significant challenge for law enforcement and communities, particularly in urban centers like London, where the concentration of incidents remains notably high.
